Radio and TV personality Chris Moyles brought his ’90s Hangover to Worcester’s New Road on Friday 5th August for a jam-packed night of music, entertainment and reminiscence.
As music lovers descended upon the cricket club, they were treated to two hours of warm-up DJ sets from the wonderful Max Tyler and Stephanie Hirst, who soon had everyone singing and dancing to hits from the last thirty years.
With the recent comeback from 90s fashion, some fans were even wearing 90s-inspired outfits, including bucket hats, tracksuit jackets and baggy jeans, which were perfectly apt for the evening.
Chris Moyles bounced on stage at about 10pm after a hilarious introduction which included quips about 90s celebrities including Britney Spears before she shaved her head and Will Smith before he punched someone at The Oscars. The popular radio DJ provided the perfect blend of 90s indie, rock, pop and dance, along with humourous anecdotes throughout the night.
Visually, it was fun to watch with colourful lighting, streamer cannons, bubble machines and giant yellow smiley face balloons bouncing around the crowd. However, the venue could have done with a few more food and drink stands for the number of people attending.
A particular highlight was the Brit Pop head-to-head between Blur, Pulp and Oasis, as one of Chris’ friends took to the stage throughout each song donning Damon Albarn, Jarvis Cocker and Liam Gallagher masks. The audience then had to cheer for which artist they liked the best, and Oasis won.
With many music fans having to travel further afield to big cities to enjoy popular gigs and DJ nights, it was great to see a big name event at a local cricket club, so let’s hope that New Road continues with more events in the not-so-distant future.
