Fast Five: A Dark Horse

How did you meet and what’s the story behind your and name?

Myself and Hugh met in New York City. We were both on our way to Woodstock 99 and even though we had lived in the same town in Dublin we only knew each other at glance. That was the first time we ever spoke to each other. It was a very random moment. And it would take a further ten years before we actually became friends and then made A Dark Horse. It just sums up the two of us. We do things a little outside of the box and we’ve been hiding underneath the scene doing our own thing without that influence on us waiting for the right moment to steal the race. But it’s more of a journey and even though people cast us to one side we never quit cause in reality it’s always the dark horse who gets there in the end.

How would you describe your music?

For me its a very personal thing. I find it hard to say it sounds like this or that in musical influence terms. More so I see in terms of colour and nature. I see waves and darkness in some parts. And then movements of trees and golden bright light in others.  A lot of the process of writing for me was a form of protection against the outside world. I would go up to my room and write as the world went dark. It was a time of great change and the relationships I held back then we’re all falling apart. I was being subtly pressured to conform to a way I couldn’t and the only way I knew was to make, create. I was getting hit by a lot of waves and in that time a lot of my peers thought I was a dreamer who had failed. That was tough. They just wanted to party but going on 30 that time had gone for me. But to be honest it was the turning point both in my real life and that of an artist that I learnt to be comfortable in my own self not to conform in anyway but follow what my heart said. And from then on the music flew out of me…and here I am speaking to you guys.

What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?

At the moment its all hands on deck. Basically four hands! We are in the process of shooting two more videos for The Heart Won’t Lie and Silence and then doing a live video recording of the EP for all those who can’t see us. Gearing up for touring and finishing off the promotions attack so to speak. Just basically opening up the world and seeing how people react. To be honest its been amazing but tiring. Two guys doing everything can take it out of the body somewhat. But it’s a great time to do that and with no budget it makes you think more outside of the box. Which is something I live for.

If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?

Unsure. I never liked The Grammys for that. I suppose it would have to be with someone who we built a friendship with over time. Someone who got the music and more importantly got on with us on a very human level. I think an interesting combo would be us instrumentally and Zach De La Rocha that could be interesting. He is someone who I have looked up to for as long as I have listened to music. A truth speaker and someone who lives the life he talks about and so in essence the true Artist.

What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?

I think due to electrical and battery problems I would pray that my guitar survived whatever chaos had landed me on that Island. Truly I would be lost and most likely not here without it.
