How did you meet and what’s the story behind your band name?
The band name is my name, Bree. And it’s a band. Not a solo project. I met my drummer, David J Castello, on my 21st birthday (thankfully, before I got hammered) at the Village Pub in Palm Springs, California. Talking to David about music immediately inspired me to get out there and rip my heart open for the world through the power of rock n roll (he still has that impact on me and God bless him for putting up with my crazy ass). Our passion for rock n roll was instantly shared and we loved all the same bands. Meeting him was something straight out of a movie. He reminded me of my first man crush, Dean Martin (swoooon). It was as if a lightening bolt shot from the sky and I knew. I remember looking at him thinking, “I’m gonna be with this man someday, I can feel it.” We met again three weeks later to talk about music and have been inseparable ever since.
Three months after David and I moved to Nashville, we met our bassist, Mayrk McNeely at the Whiskey Bent Saloon in Downtown Nashville on Broadway. At the time, he was in a great Nashville rockabilly band called the Eskimo Brothers. We were there to support our friends in the Saints of Havana for an industry showcase. When they finished playing, Mayrk walked in with his giant upright bass. I immediately pointed him out to David. Just the night before, David and I were rehearsing and we both talked about how awesome it would sound to have an upright bass for a song I’d just written. I remember him killing it on stage and thinking, “please be mine.” I walked up, gave him David’s number and asked if he’d want to try a new project where we used an upright bass in a rock n roll band. He called the next day and joined us that night for rehearsal. The chemistry between the three of us was instantaneous. Mayrk is like a brother to me and our birthdays are only a day apart. I love him to death!
P.S. We call Mayrk, Panda. I affectionately nicknamed him Panda after I read on his Facebook page that he, “studied panda sex at Harvard University.”
How would you describe your music?
If the lead singer of Save Ferris, Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift had a three-way to a soundtrack from The Who circa the late 1960s…..you’d have a Breesome Smile
What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?
We’ve been busy recording our album New Skin with our producer Justin Cortelyou and doing gigs around town, mostly in East Nashville. I’m overjoyed that we’ll be visiting the UK. From the very beginning, I’ve always felt the UK would appreciate my music (most of my musical roots are from the UK). Our album New Skin is coming out this spring and I can’t wait to share it with the world! We’ve all worked so hard on it and I really poured my heart into the music.
If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?
It’s always been David Bowie. And now it’s too late. He was a major influence on me, especially when he teamed with Mick Ronson.
What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?
Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys. It was the first album I ever bought when I was eight. Brian Wilson is a genius.
