Fast Five: Delta Rae

How did you meet and what’s the story behind your band name?

Three of us are siblings, so we met… at home. I (Ian) met Liz when we were eleven doing children’s community theatre in San Francisco. We became great friends in high school and sang together with Eric and Brittany in a county a cappella group called Til Dawn.

After college, we reunited in a house in the middle of the woods of North Carolina and recruited our rhythm section, Mike McKee and Grant Emerson, native North Carolinians and amazing musicians.

We got our band name from a fictional character in a book my mom is writing. In the book, Delta Rae is a young girl who reawakens the Greek gods and summons them to earth.

How would you describe your music?

Big gospel harmonies over alternative folk rock. It’s good.

What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?

We just released our first album in the UK and throughout some of Europe and we will be traveling across the pond frequently to tour.

If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?

Bonnie Raitt is the most stunning live vocalist I’ve ever heard. She would probably embarrass me in a duet, but it would be worth it just to hear her sing so close.

What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?

My desert island disc is the 10th Anniversary Dream Cast recording of Les Miserables. The range of emotion and the scope of storytelling is breathtaking. A close runner up would be Viva La Vida by Coldplay.
