Fast Five: Flights of Helios



How did you meet and what’s the story behind your band name?

We met in an unconvincing montage featuring bad actors pretending to be us and contrived scenarios involving dumb humour or ham-fisted pathos. It’s how most bands meet.

Helios is the Sun god in the Greek myths, and also the name given to an awesome unmanned solar-powered aircraft which floats around the earth high in the atmosphere, collecting weather data and providing communications. NASA made a prototype which eventually crashed into the ocean.  For us it’s about the importance of embracing danger and not worrying about the risks.

How would you describe your music?

Our yin: three sheets to the wind groove-prog freakouts, to our yang: moody psychedelic drone pop.  Trance music, in the biblical sense.

What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?

We’ve being honing our live kung-fu for a while and played a lot of cool gigs to a bunch of cool people. Recently put out a double-A single ‘Star//Crows’, which you can buy at gigs as a suitably cosmic poster with a download code attached or go to our Bandcamp page and buy it there.

We’re now recording our debut album with Richard Neuberg (Richard Walters, The Epstein), jamming into the naughty hours and eating our bassist’s slow-cooked spicy stew.  Gods willing it will be out in 2014 preceded by some tasty singles.

If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?

We’ve already been lucky enough to do some gigs with Mecury-nominated folkie Sam Lee and local songstress Jess Hall, but anybody?… Angel Olsen would be great for something heartbroken, Shipla Ray for something with teeth, or there’s an amazing beat poet Kate Tempest who I’d love to hear loquating over our expansive backdrops.

What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?

On last time of asking we said ‘Untitled’ by Sigur Ros as a whole band choice.  This time I’m going with one of my personal favourites, ‘The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull’ by Earth.  It just seems to cut the connection between me and the present time and place; everything slows and all concerns become abstract.  I think I would need that to survive as a castaway. And a frickin’ big PA as Earth is intended to be played seismically loud.
