Fast Five: Ilias

When did you begin making music, and did you ever ponder a different career?

I began making music in 1999! Started by teaching myself all the essential Bruce Springsteen chords and the funky Prince guitar licks. Alternative career: I always wanted to be a burger tester or reviews, someone who eats burgers all day for testing/reviewing purposes, giving burgers thumbs up or down. That would still be my dream job!

How would you describe your music?

Hypnotic. Sad. Smooth. Angry. Jazzy. Nostalgic. Uncategorizable (that’s not a real word).

What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?

I spent 10 years on and off writing the songs of my album, and the last year recording it, alone so in the next few months, I guess I need a holiday!

If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?

Aaliyah, probably the most beautiful voice since her aunty, Gladys Knight…I think it runs in the blood.

What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?

Painted From Memory by Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach. This album has everything I love about music. Incredibly sophisticated compositions, intricate melodies, beautiful, classy production, unique singing… It tells such a beautiful story of lost love & regrets…
