When did you begin making music, and did you ever ponder a different career?
I started writing songs when I was about 9, nothing serious, a few lyrics set to a melody and a poem here or there. I didn’t think about being anything at 9, I just did what made me feel happy. When I was 13 I started to play guitar, I’ve wanted to be a lot of things, briefly a novelist, an actress, a lawyer, and a housewife, but nothing ever stuck with me but music.
How would you describe your music?
My music is somewhere in a space between soul, folk, jazz, high-life and pop. When I talk to people about my music everyone has been listening to a different aspect. It’s about guitars, rhythm and feeling, It’s about explaining what I see around me.
What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?
Writing, gigging, writing, gigging, that’s really what I’ve been doing for the last few years. I’m really pleased now that the album is finished and for the future I’m looking forward to some consolidation, bringing together the music, style, gigs and visuals under one shiny Josephine banner. Deciding on elements of style, including my online presence, fashion and live show set-up is going to be a big focus for me in the coming months.
If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?
Barack Obama. As we’ve seen he’s got a nice little voice on him, and who knows after politics he might like to record an album. We could write it together, songs about the times we live in … who better? Although, I think he’d probably be quite bossy.
What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?
Can I have a compilation? If so, I’d take Bob Marley, Legend. It reminds me of my childhood, my family and everything I like about living. Music, rhythm and the observation of life.
