When did you begin making music, and did you ever ponder a different career?
Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, my parents filled our house with music and various instruments, so as a kid I was always playing around with singing, piano and my dad’s guitars. For a minute in college I thought about becoming a teacher, but that was short lived. I’ve really always known that music is a passion I wanted to devote my life to.
2. How would you describe your music?
My music is a mix of a lot of different influences. I started out singing blues and soul so it has a healthy dose of that, but I also grew up loving country artists like Gram Parsons, Dwight Yoakam and The Dixie Chicks. Moving to Nashville and writing with other country artists and songwriters has definitely had an impact on my sound as well. I’d say it’s a blend of all of those things.
What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?
I’ve spent the last several years touring heavily and learning from some of the artists I’ve been fortunate to open for. All that time on the road has helped me evolve as an artist myself. This past year I’ve been much more focused on songwriting while preparing for a new record, so I’m really excited about that. Over the next couple months I hope to start sharing some of my new music live and begin the process of making my next record.
If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?
My dream duet would be with Bonnie Raitt. She’s one of my biggest influences, especially in the way that I sing, so a duet with her would be incredible.
What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?
Late for the Sky, Jackson Browne. It’s lyrically one of my favorite records, and I grew up listening to it with my dad. For some reason it’s a record that has always been a big comfort to me. Like slipping on a old pair of shoes.
