How did you meet and what’s the story behind your band name?

‘We’ is a funny thing – we started out just Abe and Rufus, wanting to make an album of Abe’s songs that we were working on, but our record ended up being recorded with a group of amazing musicians from other bands like Cornershop, Candy Says, The Soft Tops, Viarosa, The Dreaming Spires and lots of others. So Reichenbach Falls until now has been a kind of shifting thing, with Abe playing solo or as at Wood Festival recently basically pilfering musicians shamelessly from other great bands. Which we were fine with and very grateful for, but now we’ve pretty much got a permanent roster going for touring this record and recording the next. And the name comes from the fact that Abe used to be part of the backing-band for a Sherlock Holmes-obsessive, and that whole world kind of got into our heads. Plus, it sounds cool. We think, anyway.

How would you describe your music?

We try not to, as it leads to acrimony and disagreement. But since you asked – like a party where Richard Buckner, The National, Ryan Adams and Sun Kil Moon decided to write some murder ballads with relatively low body-counts. And then a bipolar keyboard player showed up and took it in some other directions.

What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?

We’ve released a ltd ed EP, ‘I’ll Never Go Anywhere Without Her Now’, which is essentially a teaser for the full-length ‘Reports of Snow’, which we’re in the process of mixing and will be out in the autumn. We’ve been playing a bunch of shows around Oxford and London and will be playing lots more soon, including the Bullingdon in Oxford on the 20th of June. We played Wood Festival (our first festival, which we were ((and are)) psyched about), and we’ve got lots of material that we’re currently whittling down for the next album.

If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?

Jeez. P. J. Harvey, because ‘Let England Shake’ and most of the stuff before it was amazing …? Joni Mitchell, for obvious reasons. Matt Berninger from The National, because he’s the best there is? Or possibly Terry Wogan, because he’s, y’know, Terry Wogan.

What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?

Toughie. We’d push pretty hard for an iPod (they’re pretty small), but if it were a burning-building situation it’d be a tough call between Elliott Smith’s ‘Roman Candle’, Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland’ and ‘Blue’ by Joni Mitchell.
