How did you meet and what’s the story behind your band name?
Sam: We met during first year of University in 2008 after bumping into each other at a bar! We just got chatting, and Dom told me I looked like a drummer and was looking to start a band. I said he was up for it, and it kind of progressed from there.
Dom: We played in several other outfits before The Seagulls. After a couple of line up changes, the current line up was born, including my brothers Jon & Nick, with our mate Alex on the bass. Jon and I had played in bands at school before, and always had a similar music taste so it was inevitable really, a bit of a family affair.
How would you describe your music?
Dom: It’s something we like to call ‘tropical pop’. We played in Leeds recently and someone came up to us after the show and told us that was what we sounded like so it’s kind of stuck, which suits me really because I love the whole Beach Boys surfing vibe and I guess if they did a gig in the Amazon rainforest it’d probably sound like us!
Sam: I think it’s evolved and progressed a lot. At the start it was really quite generic indie and sounded like the Kooks, but now there are elements of reggae, psychedelic rock, all kinds of stuff really. Everyones got a broad music taste, and I think that definitely comes across in the new songs!
What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?
Dom: We’re just about the release the second single ‘Girl You Must Be Dreaming’ from our forthcoming debut album which is out on the 25th May. We premiered the video online last week so just building up to that really. We have a string of shows coming up including The Brewdog, Leeds on May 3rd, Head Of Steam, Newcastle on May 10th and The Islington, London on May 16th and our album is out on July 25th which we’ll be touring around Autumn time this year.
Sam: We’ve had a nice run of gigs, including several Leeds shows over the last couple of months, as well as Liverpool & Manchester for the first time. Also, we’re working on the video as Dom mentioned. After that, it’s just finishing off the last of the recording for the album and then touring it.
If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?
Dom: Dead or Alive? Dead, probably George Harrison as he’s a bit of a guitar hero of mine. Alive, it would have to be Damon Albarn, he’s a great musician and pretty much everything he’s done has been a huge success from Blur to Gorillaz to writing his own Opera. I’ve been listening to a lot of Blur again recently and their new album sounds like is gonna be a belter!
Sam: There’s too many really, for me its a toss up between The Beatles, Hendrix, Keith Moon. Also Pete Doherty.
What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?
Dom: Mine would have to be The Kinks ‘We Are The Village Green Preservation Society’ as it’s one of my favourite records. Every single song is a hit and I suppose it was around the birth of psychedelia, which we’re all huge fans of!
Sam: I need a desert island Spotify subscription, as there’s too many to chose from, we’d be here a long time while I decide!
