Fast Five: Seaming



When did you begin making music, and did you ever ponder a different career?

I began making music when I was at school, in our music lessons we all worked on those white pocket size Casio VL-1 VL-Tone synthesisers (ah, fond memories). I remember my first piece was a collaboration with Marisa, when we were eleven, and the brief was to write a love song for a film soundtrack, and it sounded like poor-man’s Rachmaninoff meets Kylie Minogue.

I come from a family of concert pianists. I grew up surrounded by music, so the desire to become a musician was already very strong. When I was eight or nine did I briefly want to pursue a career in perfumery: I had collected 294 bottles, wrote to Body Shop enquiring about a job, and they sent me a poster of the Origins and History of Perfume in Chronology!

How would you describe your music? 

Im not sure if I can! I’d probably have to play some to you…

What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?

I am currently recording, (whilst gradually tidying up my busy house; I have recently been given a harpsichord, a new member of the extended keyboard family at home! I am surrounded by period instruments, and analogue synths..!), a song cycle I composed for my mum, concert pianist Enloc Wu, to play and I’m singing and playing electronics. I’m honoured to be recording with mum, an inspiration, and of course I get to hear my pieces being played properly. Expect another album and a little tour early next year.

If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why? 

Barry White. Being fully immersed in his bass frequencies is probably a highly remedial experience.

What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album? 

Oh goodness! What a difficult question! Only one?! Other than the sounds of the island, the sea and my own heartbeat (thats included, right?), I would probably take The Exotic Moods of Les Baxter. It has everything in it, to make me shiver, grin, swoon, and shimmy to..
