Fast Five: Seward



How did you meet and what’s the story behind your band name?

We met almost six years ago after performing separately a huge series of insane jam sessions at the popular WTF nights in Jamboree Club in Barcelona. The host in there was the one and only who pushed us to launch Seward on his stage for the first time and from nowhere, really, back in January, 2010. Seward is the S. between William and Burroughs, and we’re not beat generation fanatics at all. We just loved the word itself as a hidden and surprising changing sound, just like the way we face our music: You can pronounce it in many different ways, depending where you from, and it’s just a – very inspiring – name… It means many things at the same time. After many months, we also realize you can always write it with your left hand and all its letters are all together on your computer keyboard.

How would you describe your music?

Our music is a challenge. It challenges you to redefine it again and again. It offers you the possibility to adopt it as own, to be part of it and rename it, renaming yourself too. Our music is new music. You can hate it, if you want, of course… Just don’t stand in the middle. We call it free song, but it keeps fighting against it… As we need new names for our century, rebuilding our generation with a distinct personality. We must belong to ourselves and remain true, unique. It’s one of our main responsibilities as artist in our present times.

What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?

We just released the third and last chapter of our five years project, Home, with Foehn Records. After our beloved summertime festivals in Slovakia and Czech Republic, we spent 20 days in Texas, Dallas… Recording the next album with Matt Pence (Midlake, John Grant…) and Scott Solter (St. Vincent, Mountain Goats, Dirty Projectors…). We’ll be heading London, Hamburg and Prague in the next months and we’re so excited about it.

What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?

“Smells Like Content”, by The Books, because it’s the most original, astonishing and innovative piece of art made in the last 50 years.
