Fast Five: Todd Hoover

When did you begin making music, and did you ever ponder a different career?

I began making music at the age of 16. I worked as a full-time professional journalist for nearly three years before heading back to school, and am presently trying to sustain some semblance of a career out of writing, playing and/or teaching music.

How would you describe your music?

In a nutshell, I would describe my style as modestly quirky, ethereally melodic and tastefully dramatic folk-rock for people with long attention spans and a high tolerance for non-disparaging lyrics about God.

What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?

I’ve been busy promoting my latest album, a song cycle entitled The Whole Spirit: Redemption Songs, and I’m in the process of booking performances in and around my home state of Arizona. My next show is 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 at Fiddler’s Dream, 1702 E. Glendale Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85020.

If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?

Off the top of my head, I would love to duet with Sharon Van Etten, because her voice makes me melt inside.

What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?

My desert island disc would be the Rent soundtrack — no joke. It includes just about every color in the emotional spectrum, and I can’t help but respond accordingly and unabashedly every single time I listen to it.
