When did you begin making music, and did you ever ponder a different career?
I began making music at the age of 16 on a 4 track with CD deck (fancy!). Since Ultraísta has only really existed since 2011 so Nigel, Joey and I have only made music together for the last year or so. When I was growing up I envisioned myself becoming an artist living on the coast in a farflung corner of the UK. Turns out I’m a musician living in the heart of London- whoops!
How would you describe your music?
Ultraísta is beat driven, forward-looking music with a multitude of synth and vocal layers. We’ve made an album that to me, honestly doesn’t sound like anything I’ve really heard before. In places it’s got hints of the 80s and splashes of the 90s but it never stays static long enough to really pin it down. Future music.
What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?
Recently we have been promoting our single ‘Bad Insect’ which is due out October 15th and we’ve been spending some time rehearsing our live show. The album is due out beginning of October and then we have a handful of US live dates lined up- NY, SF and LA. After those we’re back to London to carry on promoting the album in the UK and Europe.
If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?
I would’ve loved to have sung with Dusty Springfield. She is one of my favourite singers and some of her songs exude such strength, sadness and romance, all the qualities which get me hooked. ‘Losing You’ is one of my favourite songs.
What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?
Oh no. I’d probably take something terrible like the Grease soundtrack so I could amuse myself acting it out then drive myself insane fairly quickly so I could forget about all the great music that existed previous to being marooned.
