How did you meet and what’s the story behind your band name?
We were all more or less friends living in New York at the time. Jeff was going to leave town for a month to travel, so Shay decided to use his bedroom/home studio to demo some songs that she was working on. When Jeff came back, we were all sitting around listening to the songs and talking about ideas and pretty much decided to play together after that.
After much deliberation, the name came from a short story by Raymond Carver entitled What We Talk About When We Talk About Love.
How would you describe your music?
Vassals is a band that embraces the loud/quiet dichotomy of the 90s through the lense of 60s rock and psychedelia.
What have you been up to so far and what can we expect over the coming months?
We put out our first record “In My Dreams I Am A Sailor” in 2012 and have been playing around the eastern seaboard since. Aside from a satirical holiday themed EP in 2015, it’s been quite some time since we’ve put out any recorded music. Needless to say we’re pretty excited to be putting out the Halogen Days EP in the next few months.
If you could duet with anybody who would it be and why?
Probably David Bowie as he’s collaborated well with so many people and was always pushing himself and the art in a forward direction. Plus, he’s the Duke.
What’s your desert island disc and why would you take this one album?
Kind Of Blue. I’ve never tired of this record so if it was the only thing I had available to listen to for all of eternity, I honestly wouldn’t mind. Plus I would imagine you would have to do a fair amount of meditation if stuck on a desert island and it’s perfect for that.
