It’s hard to pick my favourite Christmas song ever, but (with a little bit of shame, but not too much – everyone’s allowed their guilty pleasures!) I have to admit mine is Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Okay, it’s cheesy, but by god is it a good pop song – and a little bit of cheese is exactly what you need at Christmas, after all! It’s everything you’d want from a Christmas song – cheery, singalong and feel-good. Quite a few Christmas songs (Elvis’ “Blue Christmas” and Wham!’s “Last Christmas” for example) focus on the sadder side of Christmas, however even though the subject matter of Mariah’s tune could be perceived similarly, she manages to make it happy and positive – exactly what you want to feel at Christmas. It’s the one song that will always get me in a Christmassy mood when it comes on, no matter what. I only wish she hadn’t teamed up with the horror that is Justin Bieber to remake it this year – it makes my ears sad and I’m trying to pretend it hasn’t happened.
