Focus on Festivals: Bestival 2012

Whilst this year has seen a decline in general festival ticket sales, there are some events which always seem to pull in the crowds regardless of any economic downturn. Bestival is most certainly one of them. And what does it bring that ensures its success? Like others in its class, it’s probably the commitment to providing more than just the music. Both Bestival and its younger brother Camp Bestival boast a wide range of extra curricular activities, in previous years diversifying with an extreme sports park, a roller disco, a wall of death and burlesque acts. In this respect, what others attempt Bestival tends to dominate.

Music wise there’s a lot to talk about too. This year sees soul legend Stevie Wonder, De La Soul, Roots Manuva, Sister Sledge and New Order pulled out of the bag for anyone seeking a hit of nostalgia. Elsewhere Emeli Sande, Michael Kiwanuka and Ben Howard feature in a seemingly endless lineup of upcoming artists and the likes of The XX, Two Door Cinema Club and Bat For Lashes bring some big band status. Once again diversity is the name again, with DJ sets from Annie Mac, Gilles Petersen and Jamie XX, and an injection of folk from Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo and Bellowhead.

Bestival takes place at Robin Hood Country Park on the Isle of Wight from 6-9th September 2012. For more information and tickets visit www.bestival.net
