Focus On Festivals: Sounds From The Other City 2012

With two of the major festivals (Glastonbury and Oxegen) not happening in 2012, what better time for you to turn your attentions to some of the smaller festivals happening in the UK? Currently in its seventh year the Sounds From The Other City Festival will be descending in Salford on May 6th. The independent music festival was created by Maurice and Mark Carlin and has seen some of the most potent contemporary artists perform, with the likes of Marina and the Diamonds and The Ting Tings having previously graced their stages.

Whilst music festivals are essentially about the music, the inception of Sounds From The Other City was to give local Manchester based promoters a vehicle for their artists and club nights. It is the smaller festivals that are often frequented by music industry professionals to find the best new talent that the world has to offer and they provide a great opportunity to be able to say “I saw them when…”.

The event, which lasts just one day, boasts an intriguing and compelling line-up featuring local artists along with many international acts. This year’s line-up includes not only musicians but visual artists, DJ sets and readings. It really is the epitome of eclecticism and with the likes of Laura J Martin, This Many Boyfriends and Islet taking to the stage, one not to miss. Taking place in thirteen venues along Chapel Street and costing a meagre £18 for your day long pass it really is more bang for your buck.
