Having first heard the 26 year old singer-songwriter on YouTube a year ago, it’s safe to say Kina Grannis has come a long way. Her debut album, Stairwells, was released in the UK on 7th November 2011 by One Haven Music. The album will feature songs such as Message From Your Heart, the first to make the track list, and the hugely acclaimed Valentine, which achieved over 10 million views on YouTube.
Kina plays a number of instruments on her debut, including guitars, piano, glockenspiel and ukelele. She steers clear of any synth or artificial instruments, which gives her music a natural, personal style that fits the story of her lyrics. Originally a piano and violin player from childhood, Kina picked up a guitar at the age of 15, which she taught herself to play.
Kina impressively also released three self-recorded EPs while studying a degree in Social Science and Psychology. The album Stairwells was independently funded and released, a measure Kina insisted upon for the sake of creative control. The response has no doubt been an incredible one, with the album reaching Billboard’s Top 200 and number 5 on iTunes. Kina was credited by The New York Times, and has sold out two US headlining tours. As to how the UK will take to her fine brand of new music – we wait with baited breath.
