Robyn – Body Talk Vol. 3

I have just crowned Robyn the Queen of Dance Music.  There you go. You heard it here first. Robyn is Here Robin Miriam Carlsson  told us in 15 years ago and it is five years since she release of the classic With Every Heart Beat. And like the proverbial bus,  Robyn released a trilogy of albums in 2010, stating… “It was just something I felt like I needed to do. I just never thought about selling records or not, making this decision. I just did it for myself. It’s a way of, for me, to stay inspired and to be able to do the things I like to do.” The final album is the collection of the other Body Talk albums with some of the tracks dropped and others given a shift in tempo.  So hypothetically the cream of the crop. Robyn has stated that “the albums will be very personal, like a diary”. Read on.

Body Talk is an honest and analytical expose of the dynamics of personal relationships, including darkest thoughts.  Socially aware and insightful.   Saturated in strong statements with moments of enlightenment and woven with the inescapable suffering of the human conditions.  It is heartfelt as only Robyn can do juxtaposed with robotic, futuristic and intelligent words and beats. Each song on the album is a potential huge hit.   The only fault is in that.  I got blinded half way through the album and got a little spoilt. Back to back fabulous dance songs that had me grooving and trying to catch the words not only to absorb but to sing along to.  Realising that what really unites them is their brilliance.

Body Talk vol. 3 starts with Fembot, A Madonnaesque track.  An electronicy Lady Gaga.  Perhaps Robyn should be somewhere in the midddle of that order, where Madonna led, Robyn followed and then Gaga jumped on board.   The following track Don’t Fucking Tell Me What To Do, is slower. A modern tech age song picking up on the mass media obsession that… “Everything is killing me”. Dancing On My Own is lyrical with harmony, a taste of Cyndi Lauper. A Madonna’s Who’s  That Girl. A more techno song which has already rocketed in the charts becoming worldwide success.

Indestructable – a chunk of the ’80’s that we pine for dragged in to the future.  In My Eyes is lyrically brilliant, Robyn’s singing voice is faultless.  A Girls Aloud having been electrocuted with more of a melody. And Stars Forever at the end brings us back to the start a  satisfyingly full circle. One can not help but compare Robyn to other pop princesses.  But she has surpassed them.  The other mere starlets are left in the shade of the sheer scale of this gigantic gem. Was looking into Robyn’s diary as exciting and sexy as I thought it would be?  Is Robyn a modern day poet?  Was I surprised, enlightened, spoilt and moved, inspired even?  Yes, all of these.  Did I get up and dance?  Is Robyn the Queen of Dance Music?
