Introducing Valentina Lisitsa

Melanie Spanswick

Ukrainian pianist, Valentina Lisitsa is a YouTube sensation. She has received the most hits for a classical artist ever: more than 44 million, and has promoted herself to fame and fortune via her own YouTube channel which was set up in 2007. Lisitsa, who started playing the piano at the age of three, has previously been self-managed and self-promoted but has now joined the Decca stable of musicians.

On Tuesday 19th June Lisitsa will play a solo recital at the Royal Albert Hall, her London debut. At a glance this might not seem such an unusual event. However, Lisitsa is making history because she is the first solo artist to perform at the RAH due entirely to her own self-promotion on the internet. The concert will be recorded and released first as digital-only download and then as a CD. The concert will also be streamed live via YouTube allowing all those fans who are not able to attend, the chance to hear her programme. Lisitsa’s fans will be able to vote online to decide what she will play on the night, and she has a vast repertoire, not averse to playing arrangements of very well-known works such as Schubert’s Ave Maria.

Lisitsa, who trained at the Kiev Conservatory and is 39, said: “I could not have done this without all my online fans around the world. Their reactions tell me every day that I am doing the right thing and that’s the best reward for my hard work. Now I want to say thank you and give them a great concert live and online.” Whilst Jasper Hope, Chief Operating Officer of the Royal Albert Hall, said: “Valentina is a force of nature and an extraordinary talent. I don’t know anybody else who has done this before.”
